The heavy rains have passed (at least for the time being) and Balou and Socks are taking advantage of the green grass and good weather! Luckily, they recently got their teeth powerfloated by the CHANGE Program veterinarian, and now they get to graze pain free!
Based in Northern California, the Sonoma County CHANGE Program was formed in 2007 to support Sonoma County Animal Care & Control in handling equine neglect, abuse and cruelty cases. CHANGE is a federally accredited 501(c)3 corporation with public charity status, as well as a California non-profit corporation. It is entirely supported by private funds and is 100% volunteer operated.
CHANGE provides housing, transportation, veterinary care, training and rehabilitation services to horses who enter the program via county animal services.
CHANGE also supports the District Attorney's office in prosecuting offenders, providing gratis expert witness testimony as well as raising public awareness of these cases as they make their way through the court system. In just two short years, CHANGE has helped push several cases to the courtroom, resulting in convictions, setting legal precedent and garnering national media attention.
This blog chronicles the adventures of the equines and humans who make up the CHANGE Program. It's a group effort, so look for entries from a wide variety of folks, from our volunteer veterinarian to our directors, foster barns, farriers and fundraisers.
